So long old friend. You served us well. Once upon a time you were cutting edge, but then again, so was my Sony Walkman …once. With virtually everything digital now, it’s simply not cost-effective for us to maintain a dedicated fax line.
I am sorry. You were faithful. You’ve done nothing wrong but grow old and obsolete. But no one faxes us anymore. We fax no one. And your footprint in our office is valuable real estate…
Don’t worry about us, if anyone truly needs to fax to us we can figure something out. And if we need to fax we can scan the page and send as an attachment. You can let go. The recycling center is kind. They will treat you well. And I will always think fondly of our time together.

Perhaps the fax machine will meet the turn table, Beta player and rotary phone in Old Tech Heaven. Hopefully they’ll watch over us!
In 1970, I was project manager of Rapifax, the first high-speed business fax machine. We were ahead of our time. Fax was just too leading-edge. We soon sold out to Ricoh. They changed the name to Ricohfax.
Just 30 years later, please tell me, my child, that yours was not a Ricoh.
Sigh.
HP, Dad. Your legacy is safe. xoxo
Okay, so I have been emailed now three times about this post. “Why the walkman and not a fax?”
Answer: I was busy and I found this first. And then I moved on.
Sorry for disconcerting all of you. If anyone feels strongly about it, please find an image that is copyright free and I will happily post it.
Susanna Carr just today got rid of hers, too! http://susannacarr.com/blog/2010/05/farewell-to-the-fax/
